Microalgae Protein

Protein extraction from microalgae is an important process that holds significant promise for sustainable food production. Microalgae are rich in high-quality proteins, making them the best alternative to traditional protein sources. The extraction process typically involves cell disruption techniques to release proteins from the microalgal cells. The extract obtained from cell disruption needs treatments to remove the bad smell often associated with microalgae and minimize the nucleic acid content. The protein in this treated extract, can be separated from the rest of the mixture. This recovered protein will be used in various food applications. It serves as high quality protein in making protein rich foods such as burger patties, sausages, protein crackers, etc. Moreover, it will be used as dietary supplements and in functional foods.

By using microalgae as sources of protein, we can reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional agriculture, support a more sustainable food system and make use of non-arable lands to make more food without expanding agricultural land which is often associated with deforestation.
